Tyrantrum and Aurorus Collector's Guide 2026: The Kalos Fossil Pair Before Legends Z-A
By Dexhaul Team · September 28, 2026
Both Tyrantrum and Aurorus have clean, in-stock collector paths right now, the prices are reasonable, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A launches October 16 in the Kalos region where both fossils originate.
If you have been on the fence about either Kalos fossil line, this is the window.
Why the Kalos Fossils Are Worth Collecting Now
Tyrantrum and Aurorus debuted in XY Furious Fists in 2014, the TCG set that introduced much of the Kalos generation to the card game. Neither is a Kanto Pokémon, so neither carries the demand premium that drives prices on Base Set era characters.
That gap is a feature for collectors who are paying attention. The XY-era EX promos for both Pokémon are in the $24-40 range, not the $150-500 range that comparable EX Box promos for Kanto favorites command. ME03 Perfect Order (2026) gave both a modern card update simultaneously, and the Pokémon fit plush line carries them at the same $22 price point.
The Legends Z-A hook is concrete: the game returns to Lumiose City, the capital of Kalos, and brings the full Gen 6 Pokémon roster back into the spotlight. Fossil lines from a generation tend to attract renewed collector attention when that generation gets a new game. The window to build the collection at current prices is before that attention converts to search volume.
Tyrantrum: The Rock/Dragon Collector Path
Tyrantrum is the Rock/Dragon-type evolution of Tyrunt, reached at level 39 during the day. The typing is one of only three Rock/Dragon combinations in the franchise through the Kalos era, and the jaw-based fossil aesthetic carries into every product format Tyrantrum has appeared in.
The TCG floor is the XY Furious Fists holo rare, which runs $7-9 raw at multiple sellers right now. Functional as a collection starter, but not the ceiling. The ceiling is Tyrantrum EX XY70, a Black Star Promo distributed through the Tyrantrum EX Box product in 2015.
The EX promo runs $25-40 raw NM across current listings, with the sealed Tyrantrum EX Box at $858. The box is the only existing sealed product where Tyrantrum is the named headline Pokémon, which explains the sealed premium. Most collectors targeting the EX promo specifically are buying singles at that $25-40 range, not the sealed product.
ME03 Perfect Order (2026) reprinted Tyrantrum as 062/111 in the Classic subset. Raw copies of that modern reprint run $7-8. It fills the collection without the vintage cost floor.
The Tyrantrum Plamo Advantage
Bandai's Pokémon Plamo Fossil Series produced a Tyrantrum model kit that no other Kalos Pokémon received in the fossil-themed run. The $49 build-it-yourself format maps directly to Tyrantrum's skeletal, jaw-based fossil anatomy. It is the only Kalos fossil line with a 3D buildable display format at this price point.
Aurorus has no equivalent in the Plamo line. If display formats matter to your collection setup, Tyrantrum has a format tier that Aurorus simply does not.
Aurorus: The Rock/Ice Collector Path
Aurorus is the Rock/Ice-type evolution of Amaura. The typing is rarer than Tyrantrum's in collector conversation, and the cold-climate dinosaur aesthetic translates into a visually distinct card and plush format.
The EX promo equivalent is Aurorus EX XY102, also a Black Star Promo from the XY era.
Aurorus EX XY102 floors at $12.99 NM and runs up to $37 CAD at 401 Games. The $24 Mayhem Collectables listing is mid-range for the card right now. Unlike Tyrantrum EX, Aurorus EX was distributed through general XY-era promo products without a dedicated Aurorus EX Box, which means the sealed collector ceiling is absent.
That product asymmetry cuts both ways: Aurorus EX is more accessible at the singles level, but there is no sealed product to target if you are a sealed-first collector for this character.
The Pokémon fit plush for both fossils is $22 each at Ichiba Japan. Same price, same seller, same format. If you want both on a shelf together, the total is $44 with one checkout.
The ME03 Aurorus Illustration Rare: An Unusually Cheap IR Tier
ME03 Perfect Order gave Aurorus something Tyrantrum did not receive in the same set: an Illustration Rare numbered 092/088.
That card prices at $2.33-3.00 raw across current listings. Illustration Rares typically run $10-50+ for comparable Pokémon in the Mega Evolution series, and this tier structurally occupies the same rarity slot as cards trading at multiples of that floor. The low price is not a rarity-tier error; it reflects Aurorus's current collector demand profile.
For a collector building an Aurorus-focused binder, the ME03 IR gives you the premium art tier at the cost of a standard uncommon. That is a structural quirk of the ME03 set's demand distribution, not a permanent condition.
ME03 Perfect Order: The Sealed Access Point for Both Lines
If you want both Tyrantrum and Aurorus cards in one purchase, ME03 Perfect Order is the most efficient path.
The set contains Tyrantrum 062/111 Classic and Aurorus 024/088 in the main pool, with Aurorus 092/088 IR in the above-set slot. ETBs at $54.99-74.95 give you a direct pull path for both fossils without hunting two separate singles markets. Booster packs are in stock at $4.99-8.99 for collectors who prefer cheaper per-pack entry.
Which Kalos Fossil to Collect First
If you collect TCG singles and want display versatility, Tyrantrum has the stronger product ladder. The $9 Furious Fists holo rare, the $25-40 EX promo, and the $49 Plamo model kit give you three distinct tiers at three distinct price points, plus the $858 sealed EX Box as an aspirational sealed target.
If you collect plush and budget cards, Aurorus is actually the more accessible line. The $24 EX promo undercuts Tyrantrum's equivalent, the ME03 IR is in the $2-3 range, and the $22 Pokémon fit plush matches Tyrantrum exactly. There is no display equivalent to the Plamo kit, but for a card-focused display shelf at lower cost, Aurorus has fewer price floors to clear.
Both on a single shelf at the same time: start with the two Pokémon fit plush at $44 combined, add the ME03 Perfect Order ETB for sealed pull access, and pick up the Tyrantrum EX XY70 and Aurorus EX XY102 as the TCG centerpieces. That four-purchase build covers every current product tier for both characters.
