Volcarona Collector's Guide 2026: The Larvesta Line, SV Black Bolt's 60x Spread, and Two Plush Tiers
By Dexhaul Team · October 3, 2026
The SV Black Bolt set contains two Volcarona cards, and the one numbered above the set's 86-card ceiling sells for $60 while the standard holo from the same set lists at under a dollar.
Larvesta to Volcarona: The Unova Fire Moth
Volcarona is Pokémon #637, a Fire/Bug dual type introduced in Generation 5's Unova region. Its pre-evolution, Larvesta (#636), doesn't evolve until level 59, one of the highest evolution thresholds in the original Black and White games, according to the Serebii Pokédex entry.
Most players encountered Volcarona for the first time as a post-game wild encounter on Route 14 in Black and White, where a single specimen appears at level 70. The level 59 evolution path requires raising a Larvesta through over two dozen levels before the form change, which made Rare Candies or the in-game Volcarona trade a popular shortcut for players who wanted the evolved form earlier.
Quiver Dance is Volcarona's defining competitive trait. The move raises Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed by one stage simultaneously, converting a single setup turn into a sweeper-ready threat. It remains one of the most efficient stat-boosting moves in the franchise across any format.
The Fire/Bug typing is rare at the offensive tier. Fire handles Bug's Grass-type weakness and provides a strong primary STAB option, while Bug adds Fairy resistance and utility against Psychic-type walls. The combination is distinct enough that Volcarona occupies a unique defensive profile that most teams cannot answer with a single resist.
In the Pokémon mythos encoded in the Relic Castle lore in Unova, Volcarona is described as a fire deity said to have scattered embers across the sky to replace the sun during a volcanic winter. That lore element gives Volcarona a near-Legendary cultural weight among Unova fans that extends beyond its battle role, placing it alongside characters like Zoroark and Hydreigon as the defining non-Legendary icons of the generation.
Volcarona has no Mega Evolution.
The TCG Arc: Entry Floor to Above-Ceiling
Volcarona's TCG entry floor runs from $0.10 to $0.50 across two eras. Journey Together (sv9) has the character at card 029/159 as an uncommon available from £0.15 at UK sellers. Darkness Ablaze (SWSH03, 2020) puts it at 030/189 for $0.50 at the floor, giving a six-year print history with no significant price barrier at the accessible tier.
Obsidian Flames (sv3, 2023) adds Volcarona at 041/197 as a rare, available at $2.00. That positions it as the mid-tier option for collectors building the full SV run, sitting between the SWSH-era commons and the current Black Bolt standard.
For collectors new to above-ceiling numbering in modern SV sets: any card whose number exceeds the base set count sits in the special rare tiers. Cards above the base number are typically Full Art Rares, Illustration Rares, Special Illustration Rares, or Hyper Rares.
The higher the card number relative to the base ceiling, the rarer the treatment. A card at 100/086 in a set with 86 base entries is unambiguously in the special rare bracket.
The SV Black Bolt standard holo, card 016/086, is Volcarona's baseline in the current era. It lists at $0.27 to $1.00 across English sellers, a clean display option at the lowest tier for the current SV-era print run.
Card 100/086 from the same set lists at $60.00 from Grail Collectibles AZ. The gap between card 16 at $0.27 and card 100 at $60 in the same set is a 220x spread at the floor comparison. Volcarona has no V, VMAX, VSTAR, or ex card in English sets through 2026, which means the 100/086 Special Illustration Rare is the sole premium TCG tier for this character by default.
Plush Tiers: Pokémon Fit and Sitting Cuties
The Pokémon Fit plush is the accessible entry into Volcarona's physical merchandise. It is a palmable soft-figure format from Pokémon Center Japan that runs $17.10 at Japan Figure Store and $19.00 at Ichiba Japan for the same underlying product. Both listings are the same Pokémon Center Japan item sold through separate importers, and the $1.90 gap is entirely import channel markup with no quality or content difference.
The Sitting Cuties format is a larger seated-pose plush from the same Pokémon Center Japan product family. ToyCartUSA lists the Volcarona Sitting Cuties at $52.49, which is 3.1x the Pokémon Fit floor at Japan Figure Store. The format difference between the two is display scale and pose style, not authenticity or production source.
Larvesta, Volcarona's pre-evolution, does not appear in active in-stock Pokémon Fit or Sitting Cuties listings as of October 2026. Collectors who want both stages of the line will find Volcarona covered across multiple plush formats while Larvesta is effectively absent from the current import catalogue.
For a character without a Mega Evolution or an English ex card tier, plush is where the premium physical collector format lives. The Sitting Cuties at $52.49 is the highest single-item outlay for Volcarona outside of the $60 above-ceiling TCG single, and both are accessible from independent shops without hitting a scarcity ceiling.
